Review: Prince of Wolves by Quinn Loftis

Jacque Pierce was just an ordinary 17 year old girl getting ready to start her senior year in high school in Coldspring, Texas. When a mysterious foreign exchange student from Romania moves in across the street, Jacque and her two best friends, Sally and Jen, don’t realize the last two weeks of their summer was going to get a lot more interesting. From the moment Jacque sets eyes on Fane she feels an instant connection, a pull like a moth to a flame. Little does she know that the flame she is drawn to is actually a Canis lupis, werewolf, and she just happens to be his mate; the other half of his soul. The problem is Fane is not the only wolf in Coldspring, Texas. Just as Fane and Jacque are getting to know each other, another wolf steps out to try and claim Jacque as his mate. Fane will now have to fight for the right to complete the mating bond, something that is his right by birth but is being denied him by a crazed Alpha. Will the love Fane has for Jacque be enough to give him the strength to defeat his enemy, will Jacque accept that she is Fane’s mate and complete the bond between them?

I’ve finally had my werewolf cherry popped!! So inappropriate to say that about a YA book, but that’s me…inappropriate. This book was voted next on my UtopYA poll and I’ve heard such good things about it. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. Don’t go throwing food at me, just hear me out. While I loved the story and background of the Grey wolves, the characters kind of ruined it for me.
First, you have Jacque’s two friends that have such a wild and entertaining banter. Don’t get me wrong, they were entertaining as hell but I wish they would have taken the backseat in the story instead of always being there, annoying and in your face. Jacque, like any 17 year old, threw these temper tantrums that were at times unnecessary. The one thing I wanted her to throw a big stink over, she didn’t. I mean seriously?! I would have punched Fane in the face and then made out with him like crazy. UGH.
Fane…where do I begin with Fane? Who doesn’t want a hot Romanian??  I do! You can call me your Luna anytime! My only complaint about him is that he’s kinda mellow for an Alpha. I was expecting a brooding, possessive young man instead of the big softy that he was.
I was torn between my rating for this book. While I didn’t love the characters, I didn’t hate them. I very much want to read the rest of the series and hope they get better.
